The Job Seekers Union - Helping those who want to help themselves

Welcome to The Job Seekers Union

We are in the midst of a deepening global recession. Millions of people have already lost their jobs around the world. As each week goes by, thousands upon thousands more join the unemployment queues.

In Ireland up to a thousand workers a week are losing their jobs, most are facing unemployment for the first time in their lives. Up to half a million Irish people may be out of work by Christmas 2009.

What happens to all these people? Where do they go for help? What organisation represents them or lobbies for their benefits? What practical steps can they take to help themselves? What organisational support can they get to set up job clubs or employment networking groups? How can they help stimulate local employment?

The Job Seekers Union is a not-for-profit organisation being created with the specific aim of helping people who are looking for work. Founded on positive principles, The Job Seekers Union will focus on constructive action as a means of creating change. Its aims are to support individuals looking for work, and stimulate new strategies in society that will create a positive approach to job generation.

Starting here in Ireland, by David Jones, author of ‘Oh no; I’ve lost my job. What am I going to do?’ The Job Seekers Union will focus on helping people to come together to help themselves in these difficult times. It plans to expand to provide support and guidance to people all over the world.

To begin with, we need a critical mass of members to help us receive national recognition and lobby for sponsorships so we can start to provide benefits to jobseekers across the country. Help kick start this worthwhile and challenging project by registering with The Job Seekers Union. I earnestly hope as many jobseekers as possible will register. It is not necessary to be unemployed to register though; anybody interested in improving the situation facing us today is welcome.

Registration is completely free and confidential. As a bonus all registrants will receive a free copy of the self help guide ‘What to do if you lose your job.’
